RCUK Funding Assurance provides assurance to the Accounting Officers (Chief Executives) of the seven Research Councils that public funds destined for research are properly safeguarded and used for the purposes intended by Parliament.
In essence, assurance is obtained by examining compliance with the terms and conditions which accompany research funding. This is done across four “pillars” of assurance:
Enhanced scrutiny is afforded to the research intensive research organisations who should expect assurance activity approximately every three years.
A strategy document outlines the new methodology and also gives more background information about the work of RCUK Funding Assurance.
Memoranda of understanding: RCUK and HEFCE have agreed a protocol for the exchange of institutional risk information. This is an efficient way of promoting institutional accountability and easing the regulatory burden on HEIs.
RCUK Funding Assurance is responsible for setting the dispensation rates for use by eligible higher education institutions and independent research organisations (see below).
Independent Research Organisations:-
RCUK Funding Assurance is responsible for validating FEC rates for IROs who may either elect to use dispensation rates or their own, if validated by RCUK.
