Caveats

General

All values shown are rounded to the nearest £1,000, therefore the total for all projects may not represent the sum of the values shown.
Data should not be compared with any Research Organisation level data provided.
Data excludes international subscriptions and overseas funding unless otherwise noted

AHRC

The expenditure for Research Grants and Fellowship goes back to 2005, the Training grant expenditure stops at 2009. Prior to this training grants were paid to individual students and the decision was made not to export closed grants.
Data only captures the expenditure that went through Siebel any off system payments have not been captured.
Pre 2009 No Student Funding Data is available. Before this date payments were paid to individual students, this data was not transferred into the current system.

BBSRC

BBSRC funding to the NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology is provided to CEH Wallingford
BBSRC Non-Institute Capital (not broken down by HEI) cannot be broken down by region and comprises the vast majority of BBSRC spend allocated to region: Overseas / NA
BBSRC’s spend under “Other research” is strategic grant funding to the Strategic Institutes of BBSRC
IBERS (formerly Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research) is now part of Aberystwyth University. IBERS spend has been reported within the University total from 2008/09 onwards.
Imperial College London includes MRC Clinical Sciences Centre
Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre is a collaborative facility between the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh
SRUC - Scotland's Rural College formerly Scottish Agricultural College
The James Hutton Institute was formed from the Scottish Crop Research Institute and the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute
The Pirbright Institute formerly the Institute for Animal Health
The Roslin Institute is now part of the University of Edinburgh. Roslin's spend has been reported within the University total from 2008/09 onwards
University College London includes School of Pharmacy from 2013/14
University of Cambridge Includes MRC Centre Cambridge and Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre
University of Edinburgh includes MRC Human Genetics Unit
University of Leicester includes MRC Toxicology Unit
University of Liverpool includes some Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine up to and including 2013/14

ESRC

Owing to historic payment systems which are now inaccessible, ESRC cannot provide data on 'other studentships'

EPSRC

EPSRC figures are cash payments and do not correspond to our statutory accounts which are prepared on an accruals basis, and that they are also gross payments and do not include any income.
Data is reported on a cash basis and therefore does not include accruals or other accounting adjustments.
Off System Grants are not included e.g. Wellcome/Cancer Research

MRC

Data presented aligns to the Financial Statements as presented in the MRC's Annual Report and Accounts: http://www.mrc.ac.uk/about/spending-accountability/annual-report/
Information on English regions for the MRC in 2005 is not available as it cannot be broken down in the same way due to changes in systems/methods.
The MRC has not been able to assign a region to spend related to ERANET. The ERANET scheme is a European wide initiative. The MRC contributes funds towards the UK elements which are then distributed by the lead RO in each country, the MRC does not hold any information on how the funding is dispersed. Spend relating to ERANET is not included in this summary data, but is available if required.

NERC
All data is reconciled to the NERC Annual Report – “Science budget spend in Research Organisations”.
NERC Research Centre spend  (both competitive awards and their block allocations) are excluded

STFC
Grant figures for 2011-12 and 2012-13 exclude grant payments made on behalf of UKSA.
STFC data includes resource spend at the STFC sites and the capital element of International subscriptions.

Capital Expenditure

The data below shows the historical distribution of capital expenditure by UK regions and devolved administrations over the past 5 years.

Caveats

General

Data includes capital grants to HEIs and capital awarded to research facilities
All values shown are rounded to the nearest £1,000, therefore the total for all projects may not represent the sum of the values shown.
Data should not be compared with any Research Organisation level data provided.
Data for the UK that cannot be assigned to a single region are not included in these figures.

AHRC

Data only captures the expenditure that went through Siebel any off system payments have not been captured.
AHRC does not have a capital funding baseline. However, the AHRC has received capital funding from fiscal events since 2012. This is captured in the expenditure from 2013/14.

BBSRC

BBSRC Capital includes only Institute Capital as presented in BBSRC Annual Report and Accounts; all other BBSRC capital is excluded.

NERC

All data is reconciled to the NERC Annual Report – “Science budget spend in Research Organisations”.
NERC Research Centre spend  (both competitive awards and their block allocations) are excluded
Capital grant expenditure has not been separately identified pre-2013 (due to data limitations), it is therefore included under research grant expenditure.

STFC

Grant figures for 2011-12 and 2012-13 exclude grant payments made on behalf of UKSA. STFC data includes capital provided to research facilities but excludes the operational costs of running the research facilities.
STFC accounts for its business by Department, not by location and several of the departments have activities at multiple sites. Due to this, expenditure at Daresbury Laboratory (in the North West) cannot be separated from - and is therefore included with - that at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (South East).
