Research Councils are undertaking a project to upgrade our electronic grants submission service. The Joint electronic grants submission service (Je-S) has come to a natural end and this is a fantastic opportunity to design a smarter, simpler more user friendly service in line with the latest digital standards. Work is already underway to design the new awards service. This work is based on user research to ensure that when the changes come into effect they should better meet our user’s needs.
This means that an applicant, peer reviewer or research office administrator will no longer use Je-S to apply for grants, submit reviews or manage a research organisations grants activities. There will be an entirely new service for these activities. The ambition is to start to run a small number of funding opportunities through the new service by March 2017 to test that everything is working as it should be. After March 2017 there will be parallel running of the new awards service and Je-S which will be gradually phased out throughout 2017. We expect the full transition from Je-S to the new awards service to have completed by May 2018 at the latest.

The service design blueprint looks to show complex interactions between people and their service experience – in this instance the way they interact with Research Councils grant process. It shows the user journey and the different touch points between users and the digital service that will be developed. The blueprint diagram allows the people designing and building the service to look beyond the product and bring the users experience to life. This is a first draft of the service design that we have been using to spark discussion and challenge in workshops with external users of the grants service. This is far from a final version and is changing and evolving at quite a rapid pace.
