Scheme Features and Sponsors for 2009
The scheme is open to top quality science, engineering, medicine, social science and technology students from overseas to study for PhDs over a period of three to four years, at an average annual cost per student of £30,000 (each DHPA is valued at £90,000) primarily to cover fees and maintenance.
The over-riding criterion of the scheme is excellence, and DHPA scholars should be easily recognisable as the 'best of the best'.
Each scholarship is jointly funded by one public sector (Research Council) and one private sector partner, and will be badged to show this relationship (for example a Rolls-Royce-EPSRC Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award). For each scholarship, the area of study to be undetaken must be within the remit of the associated Research Council. It is also a requirement of the scheme that DHPA scholars are placed in strong RAE-rated departments (or in a Research Council Research Institute considered to be of equivalent quality).
