Networks create new, interdisciplinary research communities and topics by developing new linkages and promoting interactions within and beyond the research base. Networks may lead to new, collaborative, multidisciplinary research proposals; some may develop into virtual centres of excellence, providing critical mass of expertise; some will create opportunities for interaction between diverse communities.
