  • NERC-ESSO MoES Call for Proposals: Drivers of Variability in the South Asian Monsoon

    The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), UK and The Earth System Science Organization (ESSO) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), India, jointly invite outline bid proposals for research on Drivers of Variability in the South Asian Monsoon.

    Up to £3m is available from NERC for this call to fund eligible costs requested by successful grant applications by UK teams. Comparable funding is available from the MoES to fund eligible costs requested in successful grant applications by Indian teams.

    Proposals are sought for collaborations between UK and Indian researchers. Projects will be selected through a two stage process.

  • BBSRC-DBT joint call for proposals for Crop Genomics

    Following a successful UK-India workshop held in May 2012 in Norwich, UK, the UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and India’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT) have now announced a join call inviting proposals for collaborative research projects that support the use of genomics and associated bioinformatics approaches to address crop improvement.

    Priority areas for this call fall into two categories:

    Enabling technologies:
    • Bioinformatics
    • Next generation sequencing
    • TILLING platform
    • Genetic diversity resources
    • High throughput chemical profiling
    Trait-oriented research:
    • Crop stress biology
    • Resource use efficiency
    • Product quality
    • Plant architecture

    BBSRC have committed up to £5 million for this call, with matched resources from DBT.

  • Upcoming joint workshop on the South Asian monsoon

    Applications are invited for UK scientists wishing to attend a joint workshop between the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences in New Delhi, India, on 4-6 February 2013. This is part of a new joint initiative between the UK and India on the South Asian monsoon through research on the links between small scale processes and larger scale monsoon variability

  • AHRC: UnBox Researcher Fellowships

    The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) announces a call for short term researcher fellowships in India. Applications are invited from researchers interested in undertaking a short-term fellowship with one of a variety of hosts in India in the run up to the 2013 UnBox festival (6-10 Feb 2013) in Delhi.

    Successful applicants will form part of small teams working on research relevant challenges at each host for 3-4 weeks leading up to the festival. They will also attend the festival itself, where they will have the chance to bid for further AHRC small-scale funding to continue collaborations.

    This opportunity is part of a collaboration with the AHRC, British Council, UnBox festival and the UK’s Science and Innovation Network.

  • BBSRC-DBT joint call for proposals Farmed Animal Disease and Health (FADH)

    The UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and India’s Department of Biotechnology DBT) jointly invite proposals for collaborative research projects for control measures and technologies to combat infectious diseases and improve health of farmed animals.

    This call is focussed around three priority areas:

    • New generation vaccines
    • Genetics of host disease resistance
    • Novel diagnostic tools

    And two underpinning, cross-cutting themes

    • Epidemiology and modelling
    • Investigating pathogen biology at the molecular level

    BBSRC have committed up to £5 million for this call, with matched resources from DBT.

  • Innovative Engineering for Health: £30 million partnership between EPSRC and the Wellcome Trust

    The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Wellcome Trust £30 million partnership is a boost for biomedical engineering research which will fund innovative and multidisciplinary projects that will help to address a defined need in healthcare for which current solutions are inadequate.

    Examples of the kind of challenging themes that the funding partners wish to address are:

    • Engineering approaches to mental health, with particular emphasis on psychiatric conditions and mood disorders
    • Solutions to facilitate neonatal and paediatric care that accommodate the challenges posed by growth and development
    • Technologies with the potential to mitigate rare diseases with special reference to solutions that can rectify an abnormality common to multiple disorders.

    Awards of up to £10 million are expected for a period up to seven years.

  • RCUK -DST call for proposals in Smart Energy Grids and Energy Storage Technologies

    Research Councils UK (RCUK) Energy Programme and India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) jointly invite UK-India proposals for research projects focusing on Smart Energy Grids and Energy Storage.

    Proposals must address one or more of the areas listed below:

    • Appropriate distributed storage technologies
    • On/off grid energy systems
    • DC networks
    • Control and communications

    RCUK have committed up to £5 million for this initiative, over a three-year period with matched resources from DST.

  • Arts & Humanities Research Council - Research Networking Scheme

    The AHRC's Research Networking scheme is designed to encourage and enable discussion and development of ideas on a specified thematic area, issue or problem through new research networks or running a short-term series of workshops, seminars or similar events.

    Proposals of up to £30,000 full economic costs for a period of up to two years may be submitted. An additional £15,000 full economic cost may be sought to cover the costs of any international participants or activities. The costs for the additional £15,000 fEC can only be those which can be directly attributable to international collaboration such as overseas travel and subsistence, international calls and/or video conferencing.

    This scheme operates without formal deadlines.

    You can submit proposals at any time of the year and you will be informed of the outcome of you proposal within a maximum of four months from the end of the month in which you apply.

    All applications to this scheme must be submitted via the cross-council Joint Electronic Submission - (Je-S) System.

  • MRC Career Development Award in Biostatistics

    The Medical Research Council has announced the MRC Career development award in biostatistics. This award is a postdoctoral fellowship aiming to support individuals working in, or who wish to move into, health related research. It provides up to four years of support for the development and investigation of innovative statistical methods and their application in clinical research. The scheme is available to individuals with PhDs in statistics, biostatistics or a related discipline and less than five years post-doctoral experience or to those who expect to have received such a doctorate by the time they intend to take up the award. Post-doctoral applicants have no residential restrictions and may come from any country.

  • ESRC-DFID joint fund for poverty alleviation research - phase 3

    Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Department for International Development (DFID) have announced their third phase of joint fund for Poverty Alleviation Research. Total budget for this call is £5.3 million and projects can range from a minimum of one year up to three years. Research under this call should address one or more of these overarching questions: What approaches are most effective in enabling the poorest to exit and stay out of poverty, and under what conditions can such approaches be replicated elsewhere and at scale? What political and institutional conditions are associated with effective poverty reduction and development, and what can domestic and external actors do to promote these conditions? What measures can be taken to reduce the risks and impact of violence and instability on the poorest and increase the effectiveness of peace building, state building and wider development interventions in fragile and conflict-affected situations?
