Applying for a visa

RCUK Office in India logoRCUK India cannot provide visa advice or influence the decision or the speed of processing of a visa application.

We strongly advise you to carefully read all the information on the relevant websites before you apply for a visa.

However the information on UK and Indian visas below should provide some initial assistance.

RCUK India can provide a support letter for your visa application (for travel to the UK or India); only if you are an RCUK grant holder or the Indian partner of a co-funded RCUK-India project.

If you require a support letter please write to us as early as possible at rcuk.india@rcuk.ac.uk with the following details and include the RCUK grant reference number in all correspondence.

  • Full name (as it appears on passport)
  • Title
  • Present official position
  • Organisation
  • Date of Birth
  • Passport Number
  • Date of issue of passport
  • Date of expiry of passport
  • Nationality

We can only provide letters of support to confirm your RCUK funding (or that of your UK partner); we cannot issue invitation letters unless we are arranging the event or visit.

Letters of support can also be provided by your host institution or the organisation you are visiting in the UK or India.

General information for travel to the United Kingdom

All information you require is available on UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) Global. VFS are the commercial partner working with UKBA in India.

  • Standard processing time
    Applications must be made at least one month in advance especially for those applying for a UK visa for the first time. You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before your date of travel to the UK. UKBA strongly advise you not to confirm your travel arrangements until you have received your visa. Read more

    All applicants must apply online, and book an appointment at one of the visa application centres. Read more to apply online.
  • Personal Appointment 
    You must attend an appointment in person to enrol your biometric information
  • Visa fee and documents
    It is essential for your passport to have at least two back-to-back blank pages. For information on visa fees, documents needed and other information, please click here.

General information for travel to India

All information you require is available on the VFS website. VFS are the commercial partner for the Indian High Commission in the UK.

  • Standard processing time
    Processing times vary from application to application. It is recommended to only confirm travel plans once you have obtained your visa. Read more

  • Making an application
    Applicants may submit their visa applications either in person or by post but everyone must fill the online form and submit the printed application form along with the required documents
    Applications submitted via post are sent to the centralised postal application centre. Please check that your photograph meets the specifications for Indian visas here.
