RCUK Office in the US logoThe team works on behalf of all Research Councils to identify and facilitate new research collaborations across the breadth of the UK’s research base.

The RCUK USA team is situated in the British Embassy in Washington DC alongside the UK Science and Innovation Network team. RCUK USA works closely with the UK S&I Network, including Consulate based teams and others such as UK Department for International Trade and the British Council to align activities and present a coordinated picture of UK research resources and expertise.

Our Team

Director: Dr Stephen Elsby: Steve has been Director of the RCUK USA team since 2012, after serving as Deputy Director for two years. Previous roles within the UK Research Councils have focused on energy research, research at the interface of the life sciences, and sector work focused on ensuring wider stakeholder engagement with the councils’ research portfolio. He has a PhD from Cranfield University where he investigated the long term decomposition of rocket propellants.

Deputy Director: Chloë Somers: Chloë joined the team as Deputy Director in January 2017. In previous roles Chloë has led the RCUK approach to Brexit, co-ordinated cross-Council international policy activities, and spent a year in Brussels advising on European research funding. She has a MA in Literary Translation from the University of East Anglia.

USA Policy Manager: Myriam Volk: Myriam joined the RCUK USA team as Policy Manager in October 2017. She previously worked for the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Prior to moving to Washington DC, she lived in New Delhi, India, for three years, where she volunteered with a range of local NGOs. She holds a Master’s degree in International Development from the University of Bath.  

Outreach Officer: Chelsea Dickson: Chelsea began as the Outreach Officer for RCUK USA in April 2017. She previously worked in Media and Development at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. She holds a master’s degree in International Relations from King’s College London.
