The team works on behalf of all Research Councils to identify and facilitate new research collaborations across the breadth of the UK’s research base.
The RCUK USA team is situated in the British Embassy in Washington DC alongside the UK Science and Innovation Network team. RCUK USA works closely with the UK S&I Network, including Consulate based teams and others such as UK Department for International Trade and the British Council to align activities and present a coordinated picture of UK research resources and expertise.

Director: Dr Steve Elsby: Dr Stephen Elsby has been Director of the RCUK USA team since 2012, after serving as Deputy Director for two years. Previous roles within the UK Research Councils have focused on energy research, research at the interface of the life sciences, and sector work focused on ensuring wider stakeholder engagement with the councils’ research portfolio. He has a PhD from Cranfield University where he investigated the long term decomposition of rocket propellants.
Deputy Director: Suzanne Austin: Suzanne joined the US team in January 2013, following a six month temporary posting in New Delhi at RCUK India. She holds a master’s degree in Forensic Linguistics and studied at Cardiff University and the University of Durham. Suzanne has previously worked in the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which included an 18 month secondment working in Abu Dhabi (UAE) to establish a new economics research agency.
Outreach Officer: Rachel Roberts Rachel Roberts started as the Outreach Officer for RCUK USA in February 2016. Rachel holds a master’s degree in European Politics from New York University and previously studied at Northeastern University and the London School of Economics. She previously worked for UK Visas and Immigration at the British Consulate General in New York and then as a health focused research analyst for a major law firm.
