2014: a year of groundbreaking discoveries in research

Throughout 2014, the Research Councils continued to fund excellent research that has a major impact on the economy and society, with the ambition of making the UK the best place to do research, innovate and grow business.

2014: A year with RCUK is a celebration of just some of the impressive activities the Research Councils have funded. One major event of the year was the production of the BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated film, The Act of Killing. The film, part of the AHRC-funded Genocide and Genre research project at the University of Westminster, explores the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s, telling the story of a group of former members of Indonesian death squads being challenged to revisit and re-enact their earlier crimes. It scooped the BAFTA for Best Documentary.

Other highlights include the development of a new test for meningitis, which could help deliver faster and more effective treatments for patients, and the discovery of a new planet almost identical to the Sun.
