There are multiple drivers for the use of greener energy sources and for securing a more efficient energy system. In 2010, 35% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions came from the energy supply sector1 and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is reflected in the UK’s Climate Change Act 2008. Investment in innovative research focused on sourcing green and efficient energy will enable the UK to be less dependent on foreign oil and gas and therefore more energy secure. Individual consumers are currently experiencing rising costs of energy bills year on year, putting more and more people into fuel poverty.
UK researchers are developing efficient technologies and alternative energy sources, as well as thinking through the land use implications for a future green energy mix.
