This analysis summarises responses to RCUK’s 2011 survey of research organisations (ROs) regarding the impact of Roberts funding to date, responses to changes in funding and strategies to 2013. It is designed to inform a 2013 review of the funding change and enable research organisations to compare their position with overall directions and context.
The 2010 independent review panel and 2011 Strategy Forum drew attention to the importance of researcher development to UK economy and society and the UK’s world leadership in this area. Both expressed concerns regarding the sustainability of researcher development beyond the end of Roberts funding. Both highlighted the importance of maintaining capacity and expertise, of keeping a broad focus on the supply of researchers to both academic careers and those in the wider economy, and of more structured engagement with employers to take account of their skill needs and to generate wider experiences for researchers.
