Gateway to Research (GtR) is RCUK’s new website, which provides a mechanism to give better access to information and academic experts through a single web-based portal funded by all seven Research Councils and the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). The portal affords a new opportunity to easily explore the entire breadth of research across all disciplines and industry sectors.
The portal launched in December 2013 and is now available to use at: http://gtr.rcuk.ac.uk/. GtR contains information about who, what and where the Research Councils fund, as well as details about the outcomes, outputs and impact held on the Research Outcomes system and linking through to other available open access repositories and data catalogues..
The service is free and open for all to use but will be of particular interest to Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to help broker business-university engagement. GtR can help make university-business connections which might lead to future collaborations. It can also help keep businesses and other users up to date about exciting developments in their field of work and encourage the uptake of existing research for commercialisation and other purposes.
The information is a snapshot on research from grants across all seven Research Councils and the Technology Strategy Board awarded from 2006 onwards and is updated periodically. The website continues to undergo improvement.
Case Studies showing how organisations are already benefiting from using GtR can be found here http://gtr.rcuk.ac.uk/resources/casestudies.html
Details about Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to export the GtR data can be found on the website, as well as a simpler mechanism for exporting selected information to a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file for further manipulation.
Keep up to date with project developments through the RCUK GtR blog site. Please email your feedback about the website to firstname.lastname@example.org.
