Glossary of terms

The following phrases and abbreviations have been commonly used in the Research Outcomes Harmonisation project:

Term or acronym  Definition or explanation 
AHRC Arts and Humanities Research Council
Attribute Assign/link a specific outcome to a grant.
Award General term for a grant, fellowship, unit programme, studentship, etc.  
BBSRC Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
DOI Digital Object Identifier, a unique ID used in publications
EPSRC Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
ESRC Economic and Social Research Council
GtR Gateway to Research, a publicly available online database of awards funded by the Research Councils
IP Intellectual Property
ISBN International Standard Book Number, a unique ID used in publications
NERC Natural Environment Research Council
PI Principal Investigator
PMID Pub Med ID, a unique ID used for publications
Portfolio A PI’s “home page” in researchfish, showing all grants/awards/funders and details of all outcomes entered, and those outputs attributed to awards
RC(s) Research Council(s)
RCUK Research Councils UK - Research Councils UK is a strategic partnership between the seven UK Research Councils
Response Code A number given to an award in researchfish which determines its status for the next submission period
RO Research Organisation
ROH Research Outcomes Harmonisation project in 2014 to record all RCUK research outcomes together into one place
ROS Research Outcomes System, the legacy system used by 5 of the Research Councils (exc. MRC & STFC)  
STFC Science and Technology Facilities Council
Submission Period The period during which PIs are asked to confirm their submission to Research Councils, in effect signing it off as complete and accurate. This is referred to as a Data Gathering Period by Researchfish
