LARCI Pilot Placement Fellowships
This past scheme provided an opportunity to either place a researcher from the
academic sector into a local authority to help tackle a particular question, or
for someone from a local authority to work in an academic organisation to gain research
skills. Placements for up to one month over a six month period were funded jointly
between LARCI and the partnering local authority.
Below you can find descriptions of the placements funded by this LARCI scheme.
Early Intervention in Parental Substance Misuse: working with expectant mothers
using drugs and alcohol

The issue of parental substance misuse is an important one for all councils.
This partnership between Stirling Council and the University of Stirling will aim
to identify the risks and needs for unborn children living with parental substance
misuse, and improve pre-birth assessment and planning processes. This project will
enable better appraisal of evidence, and will develop better practice and learning
opportunities for staff.

Developing Capacity and Capability to Embed Sustainability across the Borough
of Swindon
Sustainability is what every organisation is striving for. This partnership,
between the University of Bath and Swindon Borough Council (SBC), will give SBC
access to current research findings on sustainability in a relevant and practical
way. Research undertaken as part of the Lowcarbonworks programme will be applied
to the Council, feeding into the creation and embedding of sustainability principles
within and outside their organisation.

Local Economic Vitality through the Involvement of SME’s in EU projects

Raising levels of innovation is key to the development of every region. This
partnership between Luton Borough Council and the University of Bedfordshire aims
to raise the low level of innovation of SMEs in parts of the East of England. It
will determine which local SME’s would most benefit from participation in European
R&D programmes, and specific policy actions that need to be adopted by local authorities
to encourage active engagement in innovation.

Towards an Integrated ‘Geodata’ System to Support Glasgow City Council’s Regeneration
and other Infrastructure Development Activities
‘Geodata’ is of key importance to Glasgow City Council’s (GCC) large scale regeneration
projects. This partnership links GCC with the British Geological Survey in order
to greatly improve verification, storage, and retrieval processes of ‘Geodata’.
By creating a new digital ‘Geodata’ bank, GCC will be able to provide direct access
to this data, improve security of the data, and improve data capture and presentation.

Reviewing the Evidence on the Promotion of Well-being for Reshaping Policies
and Programmes: towards neighbourhood management, governance and development and
resident engagement

There is a wide knowledge-gap in the definition and measurement of well-being.
This partnership between the University of Brunel and Brent and Westminster City
Councils aims to provide an overview of current well-being policies and programmes,
to understand the different views and perspectives of well-being of Council professionals,
and to review the academic literature. The overall aim of the placement is to increase
Council's understanding of well-being and the associated concepts.
