Supported by RELU, LARCI and Northern Rural Network
The sustainability of hill farming, improving the success of agri-environment
schemes, integrated approaches to the management of land and water catchments, and
collaborative approaches to the management of natural resources are all key rural
development issues. The UK Research Councils' £25 million Rural Economy and Land
Use (RELU) Programme aims to advance Rural areas’ understanding of the issues and
challenges they face. This conference, in collaboration with LARCI and the Northern
Rural Network, endeavoured to explore the local and regional dimensions of this
major research programme.
Speakers covered a range of ongoing research from across the UK relating to key
rural development issues and the overarching theme of connecting public policy on
the environment, health and food at the local level.
The conference also launched the RELU programme's Visiting Fellowship scheme.
The scheme funded policy makers and practitioners from the commercial, voluntary
or public sector to visit a research team or cluster of teams.
The event attracted rural policy, planning and research staff in local and regional
government and public agencies, as well as practitioners in the private and voluntary
sectors.
