  • Centre for Digital Entertainment: University of Bath, Bournemouth University

    Visual effects, computer animation, digital film and computer games companies are driven by highly skilled people who are fully up-to-date in the latest technology and have design and management skills.

    Bringing together Bath’s Media Technology Research Centre, Bournemouth’s National Centre for Computer Animation and world-leading companies, this centre offers students the chance to gain a fully-funded doctorate while being immersed in the most dynamic, creative industry in the world.

  • Healthcare Innovation: University of Oxford

    This programme concerns engineering in healthcare innovation. Students will gain first-hand experience of how technologies they develop have potential clinical impact via a hospital internship, will develop translational research skills to both accelerate clinical uptake of technologies, and take inventions through the first steps of commercialisation.

    Students will learn how to design clinical trials, and about innovation/entrepreneurship and will conduct a PhD in information-driven healthcare, personalized modelling in healthcare, or cancer therapeutics and delivery. View a student video about the CDT.

  • HighWire: Lancaster University

    HighWire is a world class, cross-disciplinary and user-centric initiative with innovation at the heart of its curriculum and ethos. Seeking a creative fusion between computer science, management and design, it aims to produce a new breed of innovative people who understand and are able to advance the state of the art in technical, design and business innovation: innovative people prepared to work in challenging roles in organisations and ready to drive radical change in the digital economy.

  • My Life in Data: University of Nottingham

    This CDT is linked to the Horizon Digital Economy Research Hub, a new venture representing a £40 million investment by Research Councils UK and over 40 academic and industrial partners.

    Horizon will focus on the role of ‘always on, always with you’ ubiquitous computing technology in the Digital Economy.

    Building on the Digital Britain plan, Horizon will investigate the technical developments needed if electronic information is to be controlled, managed and harnessed — for example, to develop new products and services — for societal benefit.

  • Media and Arts Technology: Queen Mary, University of London 

    This programme provides an innovative, inter-disciplinary training in the science and technologies that are transforming the creative sector. It is led by internationally recognised experts in digital music, digital video, human interaction, performance, live art and digital media law.

    The centre aims to produce postgraduates who combine world-class technical and creative skills and who have a unique vision of how digital technology transforms creative possibillities and social economies.

  • Financial Computing and Analytics: University College London, London School of Economics and Imperial College London

    This centre covers financial IT, computational finance and financial engineering, software engineering, computational statistics and machine learning, network, high performance computing, mathematical modelling, statistical and signal processing.

  • Web Science Innovation: University of Southampton

    Web science is a multi-disciplinary approach to a technical understanding of the construction and analysis of the web as a distributed global information system, and a qualitative examination of the social impact of the web on human society.

    Web scientists will develop an understanding of the web's development and growth, its capacity for furthering global knowledge and communication, and its inherent values of trustworthiness, privacy and respect for social boundaries.

  • Intelligent Games and Games Intelligence: University of York, University of Essex and Goldsmiths College, University of London

    IGGI will provide students with a deep grounding in the core technical and creative skills needed to design, develop and deliver a game, as well as training in the scientific, social, therapeutic and cultural possibilities offered by the study of games and games players. Throughout their PhDs the students will participate in practical industrial workshops, intensive game development challenges and a yearly industrialy-facing symposium. All students will undertake short- and longer-term placements with companies that develop and use games. These graduates will push the frontiers of research in ineraction, media, artificial intelligence (AI) and computational creativity, creating new game-themed research areas at the boundaries of computer science and economics, sociology, biology, education, robotics and other fields.

  • Digital Civics: University of Newcastle

    Digital Civics is the endeavour of developing theories, technologies, design approaches and evaluation methods for digital technologies that support local communities, local service provision, and local democracy. The Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Civics will train more than 60 PhD students over the next nine years, exploring how digital technologies can be used to promote public participation in the design and delivery of local services, including education, public health and social care and planning.
